Raspberry Pi 4 is a fully-featured computer designed for education and developing applications

Created by the Raspberry Pi Foundation in 2014, the Raspberry Pi 4 is a fully-featured computer designed for education and developing applications. By combining accessible hardware, open source software, and an ecosystem of support materials, educators hope to create a hugely exciting space for computing. The Raspberry Pi 4 is the latest addition to the popular Raspberry Pi line of computers. Here's a closer look at what makes the latest iteration special.

The Raspberry Pi 4 boasts a faster processor and more base memory than its predecessor. At 2.4 GHz, the single core speed on the Raspberry Pi 4 is up to 3 times faster than that of its predecessor. The model also has increased RAM from 1 GB to 2 GB, giving it more total storage. Ultimately, this should provide both better performance and more storage for applications and data.

The Raspberry Pi 4 is backward compatible with all previous models. However, it's notable that the newest one supports Bluetooth, gigabit ethernet, and Wi-Fi. All three are standard features in modern computers but are still uncommon in educational devices. Educators can use Bluetooth to link their devices with projectors or wireless keyboards and mice. Gigabit ethernet lets them connect their computers directly to high-speed internet sources rather than local drives. Lastly, Wi-Fi allows them to easily connect to a variety of online educational resources and teaching tools.

The operating systems available on the Raspberry Pi 4 are Debian 10-jessie-arm64 and Ubuntu 16.04-xenial arm64 images. Both are up to date as of January 2018 and include all system upgrades since their release. These OSes come preloaded on each computer's SD card so you can start using your Pis immediately after purchase. You can also download additional OS images from the Raspberry Pi website or from other sources online.

The Raspberry Pi 4 is an impressive educational tool that should bring many exciting possibilities to classrooms everywhere. Its increased performance and compatibility with modern technology standards make it an ideal tool for use in schooling applications or for personal use outside of schooling. Educators will love having these new features available for their students to use- just download an OS image, follow the included setup guide, and you're ready to go!
